Children and employees of Minnesota schools spend 35-40 hours most weeks in school buildings across the state, many of them built on top of soils that contains some of the highest deposits of uranium in the nation. Unfortunately, most Minnesota classrooms are not tested for radon gas - a cancer-causing, noble (colorless, odorless, tasteless) gas released from uranium deposits in the soil. Radon gas is a known carcinogen that is responsible for over 20,000 deaths annually and is also the number one cause of lung cancer in non-smokers.
University of Minnesota professor, William Angell, a nationally acclaimed expert on radon testing, relates not testing for radon gas in schools to playing "Russian roulette."
Experts agree testing is VERY important in Minnesota, where 80% of counties are rated as hot zones for elevated radon exposure. However, only 53 of 331 school districts in Minnesota have tested for radon since 2012. Despite the government recommendation to test every five years, KARE 11's investigation found:
