Warmer winter poses issues for homeowners

The record warmth this winter has been a nice change compared to the subzero temperature we all expect this time of year. In the past 7 days we have seen some areas receive over 2 inches of rain. This has created a spring like effect to our phone lines with homeowners requesting help to address their basement water and seepage issues. This is a welcome sight due to the fact that our schedules usually run lighter during the holiday season. However, what most homeowners don't realize is that the worst is yet to come.

The record warmth this winter has been a nice change compared to the subzero temperature we all expect this time of year.  In the past 7 days we have seen some areas receive over 2 inches of rain.  This has created a spring like effect to our phone lines with homeowners requesting help to address their basement water and seepage issues.  This is a welcome sight due to the fact that our schedules usually run lighter during the holiday season.  However, what most homeowners don’t realize is that the worst is yet to come.

The soils around our homes are now completely saturated and now old man winter is looking to lock all that moisture in until spring.  But spring is the obvious thing to be on the lookout for basement water issues. 

As the soil around the home freezes and expands it can create extreme pressure on the foundation walls.  We have seen foundation walls new and old structurally compromised due the soil outside of the home.  In some cases extreme wall failure was created and the only solution full wall replacement.
